Brix Refractometer for Colostrum Testing
This Brix Refractometer is designed for assessing colostrum quality during calf rearing. It provides a quick way to estimate colostrum quality before first feeding, helping farmers and calf-rearing staff identify higher-quality colostrum for newborn calves.
The refractometer is calibrated using distilled water before testing. A small sample of colostrum is then placed on the glass prism and viewed through the eyepiece in natural light to obtain a Brix percentage reading.
A reading of 22% Brix or above is commonly used as an indication of good-quality colostrum.
Key Features
• Brix refractometer for colostrum testing
• Suitable for dairy and calf-rearing use
• Helps assess colostrum quality before feeding
• Simple optical measurement system
• Calibrates using distilled water
• Small sample required for testing
• Easy-to-read Brix scale
• Includes calibration screwdriver
• Includes sample pipette
• Reusable testing tool
How to Use
• Calibrate before use with 2–3 drops of distilled water
• Close the cover and ensure the liquid spreads evenly across the prism
• Allow approximately 15 seconds before taking the reading
• Hold the refractometer towards natural light and look through the eyepiece
• Adjust calibration to zero if required
• Clean and dry the prism
• Add a few drops of colostrum and repeat the process
• Read the Brix percentage where the light and dark areas meet
• Clean thoroughly after use
A reading of 22% Brix or above generally indicates good-quality colostrum. Lower readings indicate reduced colostrum quality and should be considered as part of the farm’s colostrum management programme.
A practical testing tool for helping monitor colostrum quality and support effective newborn calf management.
